UDN

Specifically, I have and will continue to recommend both shares of PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bearish (UDN: NYSEArca) for investors, and call contracts against the same for traders. The former ought to gain a minimum of 20% per quarter over the next twelve months, while the latter could earn deft operators 100% or more over the next 90 days.

AVA

“One of the most interesting companies I am following in this industry,” Zach told me, “is a company called AeroVironment, Inc (AVAV:NASDAQ).”

“One of the company’s most intriguing products is a small, un-manned airplane that can be carried onto the battlefield. If soldiers want to know what is over the next ridge or in the next valley, they can launch the plane by hand. Sophisticated cameras and radio equipment relay information to headquarters and the front line.”

“This type of technology,” Zach further explains, “shows how the current military is thinking outside the box when it comes to warfare. The rules are changing as tactics and constraints continue to evolve. And new systems and technology will play a major part in equipping the military for future missions.”

I asked Zach if he would consider AVAV a buy right now.

“Not just yet,” he said. “The stock is a bit expensive here, as investors are rightfully excited about the prospects and the share price has gotten ahead of itself. But a pullback in the coming weeks or months could provide a solid entry-point for this long-term winner in the defense space.”

GEO

Go Directly to JailReaders might care to capitalize on this nascent trend by looking into shares of commercial jails. Florida-based Geo Group (GEO:NYSE) comes to mind as a prominent up-and-comer in this field of endeavor, with some 53,144 “beds under management” (a polite euphemism borrowed from the folks in health care).GEO (GEO Group, INC.)

NYSENow, GEO is a bit smaller then most of the companies that I look at, with a market cap just a hair under $1 billion. But it is steadily improving itself by bringing more and more “beds” under management (14% in the last quarter alone). And, unlike so many other businesses, they are indeed thriving in this criminally competitive market.Net income is up 25% between 2007 Q3’s $12.7 million (25 cents/share) and 2008 Q3’s $15.9 million (31 cents/share). Profits over the same stretch rose 34 cents per share, beating expectations by 4 cents. It’s a fair bet that GEO will continue its growth without terribly much trouble, what with states coming up so short these days and need so obviously growing. The current share price as I sit to write is $18.90. Gains of 20% per quarter should be easy to maintain, and a double by summer is certainly not out of the question.
